Chiropractic History
D.D. Palmer a magnetic nerve healer, founded chiropractic in 1895. He discovered the basic premises of chiropractic while working on a deaf janitor called HARVEY LILLARD. When Palmer asked how Lillard had become deaf he replied that, 17 years earlier, while bent over in a cramped, stooping position he “heard something “pop” in his spine” and immediately started to lose his hearing.
Palmer had a look at Lillard’s spine and found a miss-aligned lump, he decided to push the vertebrae back into place, after a few days, Lillard said that his hearing was almost completely restored. Palmer developed the theory that misalignment of the bones in the spine could interfere with the “vital nerve force” travelling through the spinal nerves and that this could be a basic underlying cause to dis-ease in the body. He developed the philosophy, science and art of chiropractic around the core concept of releasing nerve blockages in the spine to facilitate a free flow of “vital nerve force” to communicate between the brain and the body.
