Sciatica, characterized by sharp, shooting pain that radiates down the leg, can be an incredibly uncomfortable and disruptive condition. Neural flossing, also known as nerve gliding or nerve stretching, is a therapeutic technique designed to improve the mobility and health of nerves in conditions like sciatica.
Just like muscles and joints, nerves can become restricted in their movement, leading to discomfort and pain. Neural flossing involves gentle, controlled movements that promote the smooth gliding of nerves within their surrounding tissues. For individuals with sciatica, where the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated, neural flossing can in some cases provide relief by breaking restrictive scar tissue/adhesion around the nerve and minimizing friction and nerve irritation. The rhythmic movements involved in neural flossing also stimulate blood circulation around the affected area.
Here is an outline of how to perform Neural Flossing to Ease Sciatica:
- Sit Up Straight
- Extend one leg and simultaneously bend your foot gently upwards toward your body and slowly tilt your head backwards (this makes your sciatic nerve slide down towards your foot).
- Release by bringing the head back down, chin towards the chest, and simultaneously bring the leg back, a bit past 90⁰ towards your buttocks (this makes your sciatic nerve slide up towards your head).
Tips for Success:
Be gentle – no need to push too hard.
Stop if you feel any pain or discomfort.
Aim for 10 reps per leg, 2-3 times a day.
